3D Printed Model of the Covid-19 Virus (SARS-CoV-2) - Education, Science, and Teaching Sculpture

£120.00
Across the globe, a vast majority of us have been affected by Covid-19. Whether enduring the numerous restrictions and lockdowns or tragically seeing the suffering or loss of loved ones. Education and understanding about the SARS-CoV-2 virus responsible for the pandemic is something we owe to everyone who has suffered over the last 18-months.

As vaccination programs progress and we approach the longer-term prospect of living with Covid-19, teaching the young and making sense of what has happened will become priorities. Whether your interest comes from researching the scientific literature or teaching and spreading awareness. What better aid to understanding and talking about the Covid-19 virus than a physical model?

Our 3D printed model of the SARS-CoV-2 virion is one of the most accurate available, displaying the surface of the virus in brilliant detail. The model includes 25 spike proteins with the 4 key conformation variants – closed, open, double-open, and post-fusion states. It also includes M protein and E protein features embedded in the surface.

The sphere of the model is 15cm in diameter, with each Spike protein around 3cm long. A display stand is also included. The model is shipped as a kit, the virion envelope sphere, and 25 spike proteins as individual pieces - each is labelled and simply slotted into place according to the included “map”.

The 3D printed sculpture is based on up-to-date scientific information and a digital molecular model containing over 7 million atoms. The viral protein structures are sourced from the Protein Data Bank, the virion model assembled by published researcher Samuel McKie. An associated website for the product, details the background information and methods used to construct this 3D print – the link provided below.

The item is painted with a red viral envelope, blue Spike proteins (multiple shadings denoting different conformations), and a black display stand. Upon purchase, different colourings can be requested. The model is printed on request and takes around two weeks, before being shipped out for delivery.

So whether you’re a teacher wanting to express the insidious ingenuity of this enemy, or a carer, medic, or scientist wanting to display a tangible sculpture of the opponent, this model is one of the most accurate available.
